BEACH CLUB: CENSORED

Woah... "BEACH CLUB!!" has been pulled from the walls of Little Creatures Brewery halfway through our show period after the content was deemed 'inappropriate' by company directors. Details below; here's some drawings!

Blackwater Showdown (Sean Morris)

Freeridin' Poseidon (Sean Morris)

Blackwater Bodysurfing (Sean Morris)

Ares (Pete Long)

Scared White Boy In A Black Neighbourhood (Pete Long)

So yeah... On boxing day some friends of ours went down to Fremantle to check out the work, only to find that it was no longer up in the gallery space. This was pretty confusing news to us, and after a number of phone calls/texts/emails over the next day or so we finally got someone to explain to us that certain important management-types had gone in over Christmas and seen the work, (10 days after it was installed), had taken offense to the content and ordered it to be taken down.

We know this isn't entirely a bad thing - there's nothing cooler than banned art - but the way this was handled by Creatures management was totally unprofessional, and while we will still drink their beer, they don't deserve to be taken seriously as an arts venue.

Because the show was cut so short and a lot of people didn't get to see it, we are considering displaying an expanded version of the exhibition just for a night or two at some Perth venue towards the end of the summer. We'll keep you posted, internet.

Local Artists Establish BEACH CLUB!!
Perth Illustrators Sean Morris and Peter Long present their joint exhibition BEACH CLUB!! at Little Creatures Brewery, Fremantle, Australia from December 15, 2008 to January 4, 2009.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Dec 3, 2008 – Illustrators Sean Morris and Peter Long will hold a joint exhibition of new work titled BEACH CLUB!! in the gallery section of Little Creatures Brewery, Fremantle from December 15 to January 4.

Both local artists have garnered a fair amount of attention during 2008 - Sean for his depictions of long-haired flying women and people in animal suits and heavy-metal t-shirts, and Pete for his fantastical marriage of trashy subject matter, supernatural and often nautical themes, and busy compositions. They share a fascination with intensely detailed fine-line drawings and a slightly crazy attention to detail, in which every strand of hair, every wrinkle and every fish scale is treated with as much importance as any other element in their pictures.

Following his solo show in August, Sean has exhibited in Los Angeles and designed a window display for Keith and Lottie as part of WIndows On William. Pete was prominent in the recent Arterial Collective launch at Ginger's Garage and stars in the summer edition of Cut and Paste DVD magazine. Both were featured in the smash-hit Artrage exhibition Candy Cult. BEACH CLUB!! caps off a busy year for both and showcases the most cohesive collection of work either artist has produced so far, all centered around the theme of summertime.

"Pete and I started talking about doing an end-of-year show back in July, in the depths of a seemingly never-ending winter," says Sean. "We got pretty excited about the idea of of just sitting in the sun and drinking some beers and drawing some pictures, and ended up deciding to make the whole thing a tribute to summertime - beach culture in particular."

Both artists tackle this theme in a typically off-beat manner, bringing together elements of greek mythology and old maritime legend with symbols of modern beach folklore, like pensioners in ill-fitting swimsuits, greasy fast-food and David Hasselhoff.

Little Creatures regularly holds exhibitions of local artists work, though the casual gallery space and fun atmosphere of the establishment seem particularly suited to the style of Morris and Long's work.

BEACH CLUB!! opens officially at 6pm on Monday December 15 and continues until Sunday January 4. Entry is free.
